What To Expect
Udo, known by various names such as Coral Island, Haenyeo Island, and Lighthouse Island, is a small island located in the eastern part of Jeju. The island is shaped like a lying cow, hence the name Udo, which means "Cow Island." Apart from the parasitic volcano Udobong of Hallasan, the island is generally flat, with steep cliffs where it meets the sea. 80% of the filming for Jeon Do-yeon's "My Mother, the Mermaid" took place on Udo. Choi Ji-woo's "Now and Forever" and Jun Ji-hyun's "Il Mare" also featured scenes shot on Udo, making it one of Jeju's representative tourist attractions. The peak standing on the flat land of Udo is Udobong. Its unique height offers a panoramic view of Udo and even a glimpse of Seongsan Ilchulbong. Climbing up the slope along the fence to the top, you arrive at the white lighthouse. The path connecting the lawn and the reed field seems more charming than the view from the top of the lighthouse. A few cows scattered among the bushes remind visitors of the island's name. Unknown wildflowers sway in the wind, creating a romantic scene akin to a lyrical poem. There are also miniature models of lighthouses such as the Sokcho Lighthouse and the Pagoda Lighthouse on display here. The path to the lighthouse is quite steep, making it unsuitable for the elderly or infirm to climb. Additionally, "Udo Eight Views" are the representative landscapes of Udo, including four pairs of scenes: Day and Night (Daytime Moon, Night Fishing Sails), Heaven and Earth (Tianjin Mountain View, Dito Green Sand), Front and Back (Front Port Island View, Back Sea Cliff), East and West (East Coast Whale Cave, West Beach White Sand). The Back Sea Cliff and East Coast Whale Cave, part of the Udo Eight Views, are located under the towering Udobong. The Back Sea Cliff is 20 meters high and 30 meters wide, surrounding the Black Sand Beach, famous for its black sand. The East Coast Whale Cave, located at the end of the beach, is one of Udo's famous caves, named for its capacity to hold eastern whales, also known as "Nose Cave." The entrance to the East Coast Whale Cave is visible only at low tide. Enjoying the outside sky and sea view from inside the cave offers a unique experience.
